Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to the enhancement of the Nigerian Postal Service by leveraging on technology to make the country’s postal service to remain nationally relevant and globally competitive.
This was made known by Honourable Sunday Adepoju, Postmaster General of the Federation/CEO, Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in his address on World Post Day.
The global event which is in its 149th edition comes up every 9th October, to celebrate the post, its importance and invaluable contributions to the socio- economic development of 192 member nations of Universal Postal Union UPU.
This year’s theme: ‘Together for Trust, collaborating for a safe and connected future’ appeared to have captured the Renewed Hope mantra of the government as it positions the post to play a crucial role in keeping the nation connected during unprecedented times and work together to build trust and safe future, the PMG enthused in his address.
Adepoju stated that about 5M postal employees globally are entrusted with a variety of essential and personal items, like messages, gifts, goods, money, medicine, etc, for delivery.
In its Annual Letter Writing Competition, the PMG hinted that NIPOST received 2966 entries of essays from secondary schools written by young Nigerians nationwide.
Out of which emerged three best essays.
Serena Giovanni Emephal of St. Brigids Girls Grammar School, Delta State, Okpunu Benita Ebanerita of Baridoo Comprehensive College, Lagos Island and Uche Nneke of Shalom Academy, Nsukka, in Enugu State emerged as three national overall winners with a cash prizes of N100,000, N75,000 & N50,000 respectively.
Honourable Adepoju Sunday highlighted the giant strides that NIPOST has made in the last one year, in procument of 20 new high tech operational mail vehicles, 100 motor bikes to enhance delivery and boost logistic handling, including last mile delivery in the country.
NIPOST is in collaboration with several government agencies like the National Population Commission (NPC), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASDRA), NSCDC and other partners to ensure efficiency in delivering its Postcode and Addressing mandate which will enhance economic development and drastically reduce general insecurity in our nation.
