Though the recently concluded 2023 general elections were marred with challenges like voter suppression, vote buying, thuggery, vandalism, ethnicity and religion, many have given the Independent National Electoral Commission for a job well done.
The introduction of technology via BVAS changed our electoral paradigm by reducing vote padding and falsification of figures. It however witnessed new infractions minted by desperate politicians. As it is an axiomatic truth that no election can be 100 per cent, INEC, has done the needful and these findings will help in organising a better election in the next four years when, hopefully, our broadband fibre optics capacity would have significantly improved.
The ethnic profiling thrown up is, however, an unfortunate development which can be tackled with more love, trust and understanding. Nigeria belongs to all and we should be able to vote and be voted for anywhere in the country. We need to heal fast and our President-Elect whose job is already cut out for him should urgently address this to infuse patriotism into Nigerians’ blood with responsive good governance.
We heartily congratulate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and we are glad that he has been preparing for over two decades to rule Nigeria. He should not disappoint us!
Ditto for the respective State Governors especially Prince Dapo Abiodun and Engr. Seyi Makinde of Ogun and Oyo respectively.
The 10th Assembly at the Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly should raise the legislative bar to reflect our 24 year unbroken democratic experience with quality law making and pro-active over-sight tasks to make life more abundant for all. This is our minimal expectations. Qualitative governance they must all give us!
